Two owners of the same aircraft type can report hourly costs that differ by half, usually because they count different things. This calculator makes the structure explicit, fuel burn, maintenance reserve and fixed overhead, so you can see exactly how the cost per hour responds to how much you actually fly.

How this calculator works

Operating cost combines fuel burn, fuel price, maintenance reserve and fixed annual overhead.

Worked example

At 42 L/h and €2.60 per litre, plus an €85 hourly maintenance reserve, the direct cost is about €194 per hour. Spread €18,000 of fixed costs over 80 annual hours and the all-in rate is roughly €419 per hour. Double the utilisation to 160 hours and the all-in rate falls towards €307, total spend rises, but each hour gets cheaper.

What an hour costs, and how much of it is fuel

Each row runs the calculator above on one aircraft's published fuel burn and its own fuel price, at 100 flight hours a year. Fuel is the input everyone estimates first and it is rarely the largest number in the row, which is the useful thing this table shows.

What the table holds fixed

  • Fuel burn is the manufacturer's or the flight manual's published figure, at the condition stated on that aircraft's own cost guide. It is not a derived or class-typical number, which is why only aircraft that have one appear here.
  • Fuel is priced at 2.6 euro per litre for avgas and 1.3 for Jet A-1. These are European planning assumptions and move faster than anything else in the table.
  • The everything-else column is the published direct hourly cost minus that fuel bill, so it carries maintenance, reserves and oil together. A negative figure would mean the published hourly cost does not cover fuel, and none of these rows is close.
  • Fixed costs are each aircraft's published annual figure, spread over 100 hours.

Frequently asked questions

What is a typical hourly operating cost for a piston single?

Direct costs for a modern four-seat piston single in Europe usually run €150–€250 per hour including fuel and maintenance reserves. The all-in number depends heavily on annual utilisation: at 50 hours a year, fixed overheads can add another €200–€400 per hour on top.

What is a maintenance reserve?

A per-hour amount set aside for large, predictable future bills: engine overhaul, propeller overhaul and scheduled component replacement. A piston engine with a €40,000 overhaul due every 2,000 hours needs about €20 per hour reserved for the engine alone. Skipping the reserve does not remove the cost, it just arrives all at once.

Why does the cost per hour fall the more I fly?

Hangar, insurance and inspections cost the same whether you fly 30 hours or 300, so every extra hour dilutes them. This is why partnerships and group ownership are so effective: the fixed block is shared while each pilot pays their own variable costs.
