With €18,000 of fixed costs and €190 of variable cost per hour, 80 hours a year costs about €33,200 — an effective €415 per flight hour. Fly only 40 hours and the annual bill drops to €25,600, but the effective rate jumps to €640 per hour: at low utilisation, fixed costs dominate.

What counts as a fixed cost?
Anything you pay even if the aircraft never leaves the hangar: hangar or tie-down fees, insurance, the base cost of the annual inspection, database and avionics subscriptions, and financing interest. Fuel, oil, engine and propeller reserves and landing fees are variable costs because they scale with flight hours.
At what point does owning beat renting?
A common rule of thumb is that ownership starts to compete with renting above roughly 75–100 hours per year, because the fixed costs spread over more hours. Below that, renting or shared ownership usually wins on pure cost — owners still buy for availability, scheduling freedom and mission fit rather than savings.
