Cessna 172 Skyhawk: the traditional king
The Skyhawk is a global aviation institution: the most produced civilian aircraft in history, with more than 45,000 built since 1956. Power has crept up over sixty years, from the original 145 hp Continental O-300, through the 150 and later 160 hp Lycoming O-320, to the 180 hp fuel-injected Lycoming IO-360 in the modern 172S.
Its defining trait is how forgiving it is, which is why it remains the world's premier trainer. Control response is gentle, the flaps are effective and the stall speed is remarkably low at around 45 knots, so everything in the circuit happens slowly. The stall itself is so docile that releasing the controls will largely recover the aircraft with little height lost, and with the right technique a 172 will take off or land in under 800 feet.
The catch is payload. Despite the four seats it is really a 2+2: gross weight is around 1,155 kg (2,550 lb), leaving a usable payload of roughly 215 to 270 kg (about 475 to 600 lb) depending on fuel. Fill the tanks (about 200 litres, 53 US gallons) and you cannot seat four adults; it is two adults and two children, or two adults and plenty of baggage.
Economically the Skyhawk is friendly. It burns roughly 30 litres of avgas per hour (about 8 US gallons), parts are available worldwide and almost any engineer can work on it for a sensible fee. Legacy models also accept cost-saving modifications (STCs) such as spin-on oil filter conversions, which extend oil changes to 50 hours, and MoGas approvals to run on cheaper automotive fuel.
The verdict: the 172 is the natural choice for flight schools, first-time buyers and weekend flyers who want predictable low-cost maintenance, forgiving handling and a global support network. Just do not expect a genuine four-adult hauler or high cruise speeds.
Piper Archer and Warrior (PA-28): the sensible low-wing workhorse
The PA-28 family, spanning the 160 hp Warrior and the 180 hp Archer, is Piper's long-running answer to the Skyhawk. Early 1960s aircraft used the constant-chord 'Hershey bar' slab wing; Piper later moved to a semi-tapered wing that added nearly a metre of span (three feet) and noticeably improved stall behaviour and handling.
Unlike the high-wing Cessna, the PA-28 is a low-wing aircraft, which changes visibility: an unobstructed view into the turn, but a wing that blocks the view below in the cruise. It has a single cabin door on the passenger side rather than the Cessna's two, yet the cabin is comfortable and stable for cross-country flying.
On performance the Warrior and Archer are close to the 172 in speed, payload and fuel burn. The real insight is value on the used market: a comparable Warrior, with similar airframe and engine times, condition and equipment, often sells for around 23,000 euro (about $25,000) less than an equivalent 172, because the Cessna name commands a premium driven by flight-school demand.
The verdict: for a budget-focused owner-operator the Archer or Warrior is arguably the smartest financial buy in the class, near-identical utility to a Skyhawk with tens of thousands kept in your pocket at purchase.
Diamond DA40: the modern composite
If the Cessna and Piper are twentieth-century engineering, the DA40 is the modern era. Built from carbon-fibre composite, it is prized for clean aerodynamics, panoramic visibility and strong passive safety, with a high-aspect-ratio wing that resists stalls and spins and contributes to a very low accident rate.
The critical choice is the engine. The DA40 XLT uses a traditional Lycoming IO-360; the DA40 NG (Next Generation) uses a 168 hp Austro AE300 diesel. The NG is a capable tourer: about 154 knots maximum, a 16,400 foot ceiling and a range near 940 nautical miles, and because it burns Jet-A it is sought after where avgas is scarce or expensive. Its FADEC reduces the pilot to a single power lever, cutting workload.
The diesel's fuel savings come with a serious catch. The Austro is bound by a strict 1,800-hour Time Before Replacement, not a Time Between Overhaul: at 1,800 hours you cannot overhaul it, you must remove it and buy a new engine from Diamond for roughly 46,000 to 55,000 euro (about $50,000 to $60,000). The turbocharged engine also runs hard, and Diamond enforces a tight parts monopoly, so even components that are standard automotive parts carry an 'Austro tax' and can ground the aircraft while they ship from Canada or Austria.
For buyers who love the airframe but not the diesel, the XLT is the answer. Its Lycoming IO-360 is serviced by any engineer, parts are cheap and plentiful, it can be overhauled traditionally for around 29,000 to 41,000 euro (about $32,000 to $45,000) and flown 'on condition' past TBO.
The verdict: the DA40 suits the pilot who wants cutting-edge aerodynamics, modern handling and exceptional visibility. Choose the XLT for modern safety with cheap, predictable legacy-engine maintenance; choose the NG only if you genuinely need Jet-A and FADEC simplicity and have budgeted for the mandatory engine replacement at 1,800 hours.
Which one should you buy?
There is no overall winner, only the best fit for a mission and a budget. The 172 rewards the buyer who values the deepest support network, the most forgiving handling and the lowest training cost. The Archer or Warrior gives essentially the same mission for materially less money up front, if you can live with a low wing and a single door. The DA40 rewards the buyer who wants the most modern airframe and the best visibility, provided the engine choice is made with eyes open.
A shortlist is not a fit. Run your real budget, passengers, trip length and annual hours through the numbers, and back any purchase with a type-specific pre-buy inspection before you commit.
