Cirrus SR22T: the high-performance benchmark
The turbocharged SR22T is the reference point for the modern high-performance piston single, and much of its appeal is that it does not feel like a traditional light aircraft. The cabin is finished to car-like standards, down to automotive-style key fobs, which is part of why it has drawn buyers stepping up from legacy airframes rather than from other Cirrus models.
The turbocharger is what earns the 'T': it holds power at altitude, so a well-flown SR22T cruises in the low 210-knot range up high and makes a capable cross-country platform. The defining safety feature remains the Cirrus Airframe Parachute System (CAPS), a whole-airframe parachute that shapes both how the aircraft is flown and how buyers weigh it.
As a used purchase, the SR22T's popularity cuts both ways: a deep market and strong support network, but wide variation in equipment, generation and condition, so the specific airframe matters more than the model name.
Diamond DA50 RG: the Jet-A single
The DA50 RG is the unusual pick here because it runs on Jet-A rather than avgas. Its 300-horsepower Continental CD-300 is a six-cylinder diesel, which matters most where avgas is expensive or hard to source, and it is efficient: economy-power fuel burns in the region of 30 litres per hour are realistic, well below a comparable avgas single.
Full Authority Digital Engine Control (FADEC) reduces engine management to a single power lever, removing the separate propeller and mixture controls and their associated workload. Built on the same fuselage as the DA62 twin, the five-seat cabin is genuinely spacious for the class, with Tesla-style doors and true air conditioning.
The trade is a younger type with a smaller fleet and support network than the established Cirrus and Piper lines, so confirm parts availability and a maintenance organisation that knows the CD-300 before committing.
Piper Matrix: cabin-class space without pressurization
The Matrix is the PA-46 airframe with the pressurization system removed. It shares its structure with the pressurized Mirage and the turbine Meridian, but deleting pressurization removes several hundred parts and roughly 90 kg, which lowers both maintenance complexity and empty weight. For a buyer who wants cabin-class room without the cost of maintaining a pressure vessel, it is a deliberate compromise rather than a stripped-out model.
The rear cabin is the point of the aircraft: club seating for four with a pull-out table, individual vents and reading lights, closer to an entry-level business cabin than to a typical four-seat single. The 350-horsepower Lycoming cruises in the region of 180 knots on a fuel burn around 76 litres per hour, and a built-in six-place oxygen system supports flight in the higher, unpressurized altitudes.
Because the airframe is shared across three models, a pre-buy should confirm exactly which systems this example carries and how it has been maintained; PA-46 ownership rewards careful logbook review.
Daher Kodiak 900: backcountry payload and turboprop utility
The Kodiak 900 is the load-hauler of the group, a single-engine turboprop designed to carry people or cargo into short, unimproved strips. It can be configured for up to ten occupants or a payload in the region of 1,360 kg while retaining the ability to operate from rough fields, with an optional external cargo pod for bulky loads.
Its roughly 900-horsepower turboprop moves the aircraft at cruise speeds around 210 knots despite its size, so the utility mission does not come at the usual speed penalty. The wing is designed for benign low-speed behaviour, retaining aileron authority deep into the stall, which is part of what makes it manageable in tight backcountry work.
This is a working aircraft, and buyers should weigh turboprop operating costs, the value of the useful load for their actual mission, and whether the short-field capability is a genuine requirement or a nice-to-have.
Cirrus Vision Jet (SF50): the single-engine personal jet
The Vision Jet is the step out of the propeller market entirely. A single Williams FJ33 turbofan, mounted above the fuselage, gives cruise speeds above 300 knots and a maximum range in the region of 1,275 nautical miles, positioning it as a personal jet a single owner-pilot can realistically fly.
Safety is central to its design. It carries CAPS, the whole-airframe parachute, and Safe Return, an emergency autoland system: if the pilot is incapacitated, a passenger can trigger it and the aircraft will communicate with air traffic control, route to a suitable airport and land itself. The distinctive cabin shape yields notable head and shoulder room, and the interior reconfigures from an executive layout to a larger cargo-friendly one.
As the most complex and expensive option here, it brings jet ownership realities: type-specific training, higher fixed costs and a different maintenance regime. It suits a buyer whose mission genuinely justifies jet speed and range rather than one chasing the badge.
Which one fits your mission?
There is no single winner, only the closest match to a mission. Prioritise refined high-performance touring and the SR22T is the benchmark; weigh fuel cost or Jet-A availability and the DA50 RG becomes compelling. Want cabin-class space affordably and the Matrix is the loophole; need to haul payload into short strips and the Kodiak 900 stands alone; and if the mission truly calls for jet speed and range, the Vision Jet is the step out of pistons.
